By the time October 6th comes around, we all tend to start counting the days until the fall holidays arrive! However, before you let today go by too fast, it’s important we take some time to honor this great day. Here are some of the most important things to know about October 6th, and many happy returns if today marks a birthday, an anniversary, or other special occasions.
On this day
Louis XIV returned to Paris.
In 1789, during the already-underway French Revolution, King Louis XIV returned to Paris from Versailles. He returned after being confronted by Parisian women on October 5th about his lack of support.
Mary Leakey changed our view of history.
In 1948, paleoanthropologist Mary Leakey found the first partial fossil skill of Proconsul Africanus. The species was an ancestor to the apes and humans. She found the remains on Rusinga Island in Kenya.
Fiji became a republic.
In 1987, Fiji finally became a republic. It was declared so by military coup leader Major-General Sitiveni Rabuka. The country was originally thrown out of the Commonwealth this month, too – but it has since been re-admitted following its coup.
Storm Nate devastated multiple countries.
In 2017, Storm Nate passed through Costa Rica, Honduras, and Nicaragua. It killed at least 22 people in its path. It was a category one hurricane that traveled at almost 30 miles per hour.
The Nobel Prize made its way to Roger Penrose and his colleagues.
In 2020, the Nobel Prize for Physics was awarded to Roger Penrose, Andrea M. Ghez, and Reinhard Genzel. They won the award for their work on research into black holes – which, fascinatingly, we’ve been able to see photos of for the first time in recent years!

World Cerebral Palsy Day
Every October 6th, the world unites to honor World Cerebral Palsy Day. Cerebral palsy is a disorder that affects over 17 million people worldwide, yet so many of us know very little about the disorder. People living with cerebral palsy often struggle with physical disabilities that, thus far, cannot be cured. So, this year, take the time to research cerebral palsy and learn more about it and how it affects so many of us around the world.
Turkmenistan Earthquake Memorial Day
October 6th is also the day that Turkmenistan remembers the 1948 earthquake that shook the nation and killed about 110,000 people. Memorials take place all over the country today to honor those affected by the earthquake and to remember the lives lost.
October Liberation War
In Syria, October 6th is October Liberatory War Day. It is a public holiday that commemorates the Yom Kippur War of 1973. The war was eventually brought to a ceasefire by the United Nations, which led to the Israeli peace talks with Egypt. The two states eventually signed a peace treaty in 1979, marking a new beginning for peace.

The Cuban Missile Crisis came to an end. In 1962, the crisis ended as Nikita Khrushchev, the then-leader of Soviet Russia, announced that the government was halting the construction of missile bases in Cuba and would remove the missiles from the area, too. US President John F. Kennedy agreed and lifted the US naval blockade on Cuba.
